What is Intarsia Knitting?

Intarsia, also know as picture knitting, is a colourwork technique. It is one way you can knit with multiple colours at the same time.

Intarsia works best on flat worked stockinette stitch, which is why all our patterns are worked flat on straight needles.

Intarsia is a great technique for beginners who want to try colourwork. This because you work the motifs with small separate strand of coloured yarn (also call butterflys or bobbins) so it is often neater than stranding the different colours across the back of the work.

HOW TO KNIT INTARSIA

  • Start knitting as normal using your first colour to the point you want a different coloured section.

  • Using the new colour (leaving a long tail to weave in later) loop the new yarn over the needle and complete the stitch as normal.

  • Repeat across the row adding in new stands for every colour change, working to end.

  • On the purl row the yarn strands are held at the front of the work and purled as you would with any yarn.

  • Remember to twist the strands to avoid gaps where the colours meet.

Our motif picture charts tell you basic colours ie. Red, Green, Blue, rather than brand shade names. This is so you can uses any yarn left over in your yarn stash. Intarsia is great for stash busting!
